The Westernaires 1997 show season was highlighted by an extraordinary opportunity for the young riders who have for years performed under the banner "THE BEST PRECISION MOUNTED DRILL TEAM AT SPEED IN THE WORLD." The Denver Summit of the Eight was a gathering of the leaders of the eight industrialized nations of the free world to discuss the economic future for the entire world. From Canada, Japan, Russia, Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany the leaders and their wives came to be greeted in Denver by President and Mrs. Clinton. Days of intense meetings and bilateral discussions took place and Denver was truly the center of world power.

The last night, Saturday, prior to a star studded entertainment produced for the leaders, they gathered with their wives at the Fort Restaurant near Morrison, Colorado for a western theme dinner. The White House requested the Westernaires to provide an introductory, atmosphere establishing event just east of the Fort Restaurant. With President and Mrs. Clinton and the other leaders and their spouses standing on a bluff, to the theme music from Bonanza, 35 riders from the Red Team crested a low hill and swept down across a meadow with flags flying. They disappeared behind another low hill and then, to the tune of Stars and Stripes Forever, burst over the hill and performed the Firelight Drill. Eight of the riders carried the flags of the nations present and a ninth carried the European Union. At the end of the drill, the flags were presented to the leaders on the bluff. Later, the President was heard to remark that the "kids and horses were the highlight of Denver." What a great night in June for all of Westernaires!
