Adult Riding Lessons

The 2008 Spring Adult Ride Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 PM in the Red Arena. Attendance at orientation is mandatory for all adults who intend to ride this season and have not attended an orientation session in the past. Beginners will ride on Tuesdays starting the 19th and Intermediate riders will ride on Wednesday starting the 20th, both rides start at 6:45PM. Rental fees apply and this course is open to all adults over the age of 18. .

Every year Westernaires provides riding lessons to adults. Unlike the requirements for kids, the adults do not need to live in Jefferson County, or have kids in the organization. The lessons begin with an orientation meeting at which the students learn what the course covers and then are taught to groom and saddle a horse. The fees are $10 per week for horse rental or $3 if you provide your own horse.

Basic Directions to the Red Arena for those who don't know are:

    1. From the Intersection of W. 6th Avenue and Indiana Street, proceeed South, thru the Service Road stop light on the south side of west 6th avenue.
    2. Turn right (west) at the next entry to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. There is also a sign that says "Westernaires", to the right as you enter the fairgrounds from this entrance.
    3. Park on the West side of the large building, the Glen E. Keller Jr. Equestrian Center.
    4. Walk up the hill (South), through the gate with the sign "Westernaire Fort"
    5. Walk through the compound to the large building directly South and proceed up the stairs.
    6. When you get to the top of the stairs you will be in our "Blue Arena".
    7. At the South end (straight ahead) of the blue arena you will see a set of red double doors.
    8. Walk through these double doors and you will be in our "Red Arena".

    PLEASE NOTE: Ms. McIlwee is the contact for the adult riding program only. Please visit or call the Westernaire Fort office for other information or questions regarding the Westernaires. The Fort office is open most Saturdays, year-round, from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
